How Returns Work on Amazon Handmade

Amazon Handmade purchases mostly follow standard Amazon return policy, with one major exception: personalized or made-to-order items. Knowing the difference before you buy avoids a frustrating surprise.

The short version: Non-personalized items typically qualify for Amazon's standard 30-day return window. Personalized, engraved, or made-to-order items are usually final sale unless the item arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect. Always check the individual listing before ordering something custom.

Standard (Non-Personalized) Items

If you buy an item that isn't customized, an in-stock ceramic mug, a pre-made leather wallet, a set of coasters, it falls under Amazon's normal return policy. Most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a refund, minus return shipping in some cases depending on the reason for return.

Personalized and Made-to-Order Items

Anything engraved, monogrammed, or built to custom specifications (a name, a date, a size) is treated differently. These are typically final sale once production has started. Sellers can't resell a wallet with someone else's initials on it, so the return policy reflects that reality.

Before ordering something personalized: double-check spelling, dates, and sizing carefully. Read the listing's stated production and return terms, they're usually spelled out near the customization options. If you're unsure, message the seller directly before ordering, most respond within a day or two.

What If an Item Arrives Damaged or Wrong?

Damaged, defective, or incorrect items are refundable or replaceable regardless of personalization. This protection applies even to custom orders, if the maker sent the wrong name or the item arrived broken, that's on them, not you. Contact the seller first, then escalate to Amazon customer service if you don't get a response within a reasonable window.
